Townsville
Townsville was founded and named after Robert Towns
in 1864, and was originally developed around the Townsville Port
which provided a vital transport link for agricultural and mineral
products from North Queensland to the world. In 1945 due to World
War Two and the war in the Pacific, Townsville became a Garrison
base and still remains today, a strategically important defence
centre with the largest defence establishment in Australia.
Townsville, now has a population of around 160,000, is considered
a major hub within the region and has been affectionately gifted
the title of 'Capital of North Queensland by locals'. It is considered
the northern link for State and Federal Governments, as well as
for private enterprise in primary and secondary industries, Army
and RAAF military, mining, commerce, retail, and community and cultural
services.
